When the summer heat hits hard, keeping your toddler cool and entertained can feel like a full-time job. We’ve been experimenting with simple, sensory-rich ways to beat the heat and this frozen toy rescue activity was a total hit!

What We Did

We grabbed a few of our toddler’s favorite small plastic toys (think dinosaurs, trucks, and animals) and froze them in a plastic container filled with water. For an extra twist, we used water from his water table so the whole activity felt like one big adventure from start to finish!

Once the toys were fully frozen, we took the icy block outside and handed him his toy hammer for a rescue mission. He chipped, tapped, and giggled his way through the ice, slowly revealing each hidden treasure. We also poured water over the ice to help things along, which added another fun sensory element.

Why We Loved It

  • Sensory play: The cold ice, wet toys, and noisy hammering gave his senses a workout.

  • Motor skill development: Using the toy hammer or mallet and pouring water encouraged coordination.

  • Weather-friendly: Perfect for hot days when you want to stay outside but still stay cool.

  • Low-prep fun: Just a few toys and water, no fancy supplies needed!

Tips for Your Own Toy Rescue

  • Use plastic animals, cars, or figurines that are waterproof and easy to clean.

  • Freeze in layers if you want to stretch out the activity (add water and toys in stages).

  • Provide a variety of tools (measuring cups, toy hammers, even spoons) to encourage creativity.

  • Supervise closely, especially if using any tools or water.

This quick and easy activity kept our toddler happily engaged and surprisingly cool. It’s definitely going into our summer rotation!
